Norman Wilkinson

The Norman Wilkinson
Collection

Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971) was a prolific painter, illustrator, poster artist, and wartime camoufleur. He was the inventor of Dazzle Painting, a technique of ship camouflage used extensively during World War I.

Born in Cambridge, his early artistic training took place around Portsmouth and Cornwall, and at Southsea School of Art, where he later taught. He also studied with seascape painter Louis Grier. At age 21, he studied academic figure painting in Paris, but by then his fascination with the sea and maritime subject matter was firmly established.

Our collection of six of Wilkinson’s Irish landscapes contain wonderful examples of this fascination with the sea, and the coastal scenes for which he is so renowned. They were commissioned in 1949 for the University’s Medical Library where they remain today, at its current home in the Mulhouse Building.
