Open Call 2017
We are delighted to reveal the winner of our 2017 Open Call, who will present their work in a solo exhibition at the gallery, opening in August 2018. We received almost 150 entries from around the world, which resulted in a shortlist of the seven strongest proposals:
Jacqueline Huskisson (Canada)
Laura Kelly (Ireland)
Justine McDonnell (Ireland)
Jonathan McFadden (USA)
Brian J. Morrison (Northern Ireland)
Sean O’Connor (USA)
Jaeyeon Shin (USA)
It is with great pleasure that we announce Sean O’Connor as the winner of the Open Call. O’Connor works primarily as a painter, exploring themes around masculinity, representations of male beauty throughout history, and the archetypes we associate with the male gender; strength, athleticism and stoicism. This will mark O’Connor’s first solo exhibition outside of the United States, and we are looking forward to working with him over the coming months.
We wish to thank all those who took the time to submit proposals, and would like to congratulate all of the shortlisted artists, who made the selection process very difficult indeed.
Special thanks to our international panel of jurors, who assisted our Curator in the selection process:
Colin Davidson, artist and member of the Queen’s University Belfast Arts Advisory Group
Manuela Pacella, independent curator (Graz / Rome)
Matthew Poole, Chair of the Department of Art, California State University, San Bernardino
Rachel Steinberg, Director of SOHO20, New York
